Peterhead missed the chance to finish second in Scottish League One after losing 1-0 at champions Dunfermline.
A win for the visitors would have seen them leapfrog Ayr but Joe Cardle's 14th goal of the season condemned them to a sixth consecutive loss.
Cardle netted the winner in the 17th minute when he converted from Ryan Wallace's pass.
Dunfermline, therefore, end their stay in League One with a first win in four outings, ending a two-match losing streak.
