AC Milan general manager Marco Fassone has said it will just be a matter of days before Gianluigi Donnarumma commits to a new contract for the Serie A club.
Last month the 18-year-old goalkeeper turned down Milan's offer of a new contract beyond the expiry of his current deal in 2018 but, after drawing an angry reaction from fans, he has reportedly had a change of heart.
Reports in Italy suggest he will become the third highest-paid goalkeeper in Europe by agreeing to a deal worth €6 million-a-year plus bonuses and Fassone confirmed that an agreement is imminent.
"I had always said that the doors to Milan would be reopened if Gigio ever reconsidered," Fassone told Il Corriere della Sera. "There has been some reconsideration and I have the feeling that we are very close to an agreement with the player and his family, although I do not want to get involved in any more compromises.
"I think a decision, which will be down to the player, will arrive in one or two days."
While Fassone believes Donnarumma wants to commit his future to the Rossoneri, his agent Mino Raiola will still take some more convincing.
"These decisions are never taken by the player alone," he said. "There are agents, and in this case it is a very clever one, who has his ideas and convictions which are a bit distant from ours, so I don't know what the final decision will be.
"Mino is the person I talk to, and we are talking several times a day. Like I said, I believe an agreement with the player and his family is close, but the other is more complicated.
"I feel that I've learnt how to manage situations like this not with my gut feeling but with rationality. Gigio is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and to let him go at the end of the year would mean losing an icon. This is why I decided to keep going [with negotiations], albeit setting a bar which we cannot raise any further."
Donnarumma is reported to have flown to Ibiza for a holiday rather than sit his school-leaving exams on Wednesday. Meanwhile, his Milan teammates are due to commence preseason training at Milanello on Wednesday afternoon.
