LONDON -- Tottenham Hotspur head coach Mauricio Pochettino has hailed the club's "massive potential" after agreeing a new contract until 2021.
Pochettino, 44, has three years remaining on his current deal but revealed on Friday that he has verbally agreed a two-year extension and says he will sign in the coming days.
The former Argentina international joined Spurs from Southampton in summer 2014 and led the club to the League Cup final and a fifth-place finish in his debut season.
This term, he has established Spurs as a major force in the Premier League and they remain in with a mathematical chance of winning a first league title since 1961, although they trail Leicester by seven points with three matches remaining.
"I can say now that we've reached a verbal agreement with the club to extend my contract here for two more years more until 2021," Pochettino told a news conference. "We haven't sign yet but we reached a verbal agreement to stay here for the next five years.
"We started speaking a few months ago. Today is a good moment to communicate that we reached a verbal agreement. I'm very happy.
"It's for many reasons. Tottenham has unbelievable potential. We created after two years here, a great group of players. We have a very strong squad -- young with potential to be at the top. The staff, all the people that work here, the supporters are unbelievable. There's massive potential. Why not stay here?
"I will sign Tuesday or tomorrow -- it depends on my lawyer. It's a good moment to communicate to you so all people know my future is here."
Pochettino recently hinted that he was in no rush to agree a new deal - and earlier this week spoke of his desire to manage Paris Saint-Germain, where he was captain as a player, in the future -- but he stressed that it was not a difficult to decision, insisting he had full faith in the club's "project."
He said: "It was an easy decision. When you're happy, and when you feel the love of the people, and the potential of the club I think is massive. Why change? Why not stay here? We create a very good atmosphere in the changing room, on the training ground. With all staff we have an excellent relationship. We can achieve big things in the future.
"It's true that I believe in the club, I believe in players, staff and supporters. For that, I said yes to stay here and extend the contract. I believe in this project, in this club."
