Wolfsburg's United States defender John Brooks closer to return - source

United States international John Brooks is closing in on a return to full training with Wolfsburg as he recovers from a tendon injury.

A source told ESPN FC that Brooks, 24, has completed his first individual training sessions with the ball.

It comes less than two months after the defender tore tendons in his thigh during his debut in a cup win at Eintracht Norderstedt in August.

Wolfsburg had initially said Brooks would be out for around three months, but it remains unclear exactly when he will resume full training.

He joined from hometown club Hertha Berlin in the summer for a reported €20 million, a record fee for a U.S. footballer.

Meanwhile, forward Mario Gomez has returned to training and is nearing his comeback after suffering a ligament injury last month.

On Sunday, Wolfsburg travel to Bayer Leverkusen where they are looking for their first win under new head coach Martin Schmidt in his fourth game in charge.
