A terrifying crash marred Stage 3 of the Tour de France

Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez won Stage 3 of the Tour de France, but his achievement was overshadowed by a nasty crash.

The incident occurred with about 37 miles left in the stage. Twenty riders went down, including leader Fabian Cancellara, who ceded the yellow jersey after tumbling hard and eventually withdrew after tests revealed fractured vertebra.

In all, five riders abandoned the race. The peloton was neutralized and then stopped altogether for nearly 20 minutes at the base of the first climb.

The crash produced some scary images as well.
