WOOD MEMORIAL STAKES | PURSE: $1 MILLION | GRADE 1 | 3-YEAR-OLDS | 1 1/8 MILES
OZONE PARK, N.Y. -- Uncle Mo arrived at his Belmont Park home at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday and two hours later was assigned post 5 for his engagement in Saturday's $1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, where he will face nine opponents.
Uncle Mo, undefeated in four starts, has won three stakes -- the Grade 1 Champagne, Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and the Timely Writer Stakes -- which is one more than his nine opponents combined. Toby's Corner, who won the Whirlaway, and Preachintothedevil, who took the Champagneforashley Stakes for New York-breds, are the other stakes winners in the field.
Before post positions were assigned, trainer Todd Pletcher said he welcomed the 10-horse field.
"I think it's good, we're not too worried about post positions or anything like that," Pletcher said. "We'll see how it shapes up and see the running styles of the other horses and come up with a strategy at that point."
John Velazquez will ride Uncle Mo.
Uncle Mo was scheduled to arrive from south Florida on Tuesday, but concerns over inclement weather postponed that flight until Wednesday. Uncle Mo came through the Belmont Park gates at 11:15 a.m. and was the first horse unloaded off the horse van. He was walked to Pletcher's Belmont barn, where he took a few turns around the shed row before being bedded down.
"He shipped in really well and everything went smoothly," Pletcher said. "I'm glad we waited the [extra] day and let the weather clear up. We had an uneventful trip."
