Smashnova beats top seed, reaches Budapest semis

BUDAPEST, Hungary -- Anna Smashnova of Israel beat
top-seeded Catalina Castano of Colombia 6-2, 6-2 on Friday and
advanced to the semifinals of the Budapest Grand Prix.

Smashnova, who beat Castano by the same score in last year's
final, will face Martina Muller in the next round. Muller, of
Germany, defeated Eva Birnerova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7), 4-6,

Second-seeded Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands eliminated
Italy's Sara Errani 6-4, 6-4, advancing to a semifinal matchup with
No. 5 seed Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain, who eliminated Italy's
Romina Oprandi 6-3, 6-0.

Despite losing to Smashnova in this event a year ago, Castano
entered the match with confidence. But too many unforced errors,
including several missed smashes, made it relatively easy for the
Israeli, who won on her first match point.

The victory forced Smashnova to rush after the match to change
her airline ticket to a later date.

"I played good tennis," she said. "It was not as easy as the
score suggests."
