Hyperion to release ESPN SportsCentury in September

On September 22, Hyperion will release ESPN SportsCentury, the definitive book on sports in the 20th century highlighted by original essays on the century's most identifiable athletes by 10 top authors. In addition to the essays, the hard-cover "coffee table-style" commemorative book includes profiles, items by ESPN commentators, interesting facts, tidbits, pictures and more -- a thorough recap on the past 100 years in sports.

If it happened in the 20th century, you'll find it in ESPN SportsCentury - coming this fall

The release of the book will mark the latest extension in the continuing ESPN SportsCentury multi-media initiative, which includes 60 hours of television programming on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Halberstam wrote the introduction to the book, while ESPN's Chris Berman wrote the foreword. The editor of the book is Michael MacCambridge, author of The Franchise.

"We've assembled the best in publishing to recount the century's best in sports," said John A. Walsh, ESPN senior vice president and executive editor. "We hope that the book will become the signature print offering on sports in the 20th century."

The book includes 10 chapters, each with an original essay on the athlete(s) who best defined each decade. The chapters also feature shorter items on other athletes included on ESPN's SportsCentury 100 greatest North American athletes of the century list.

Each chapter ends with a "Playbook," highlighting the decade's top games, teams, coaches and influential people. It also includes items on the intersection of sports and culture in the 20th century, top news stories, trends in sports, charts and more.

Original essays for ESPN SportsCentury were written by a select group of top authors, including Gerald Early, Nicholas Lemann, Robert W. Creamer, Wilfrid Sheed, Roy Blount, Jr., Dick Schaap, Tony Kornheiser, Joyce Carol Oates, Thomas Boswell and Nelson George.

ESPN SportsCentury also features contributions from ESPN commentators with items by Linda Cohn, Rich Eisen, Bob Ley, Kenny Mayne, Dan Patrick, Karl Ravech, Robin Roberts, Stuart Scott, Charley Steiner and Mike Tirico.

The book will receive extensive marketing support from all ESPN entities, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPN Classic, ESPN Radio, ESPN.com, ESPN The Magazine and more.
