Kournikova out of French Open Associated Press PARIS -- Anna Kournikova and Richard Krajicek withdrew from the French Open on Thursday because of injuries. Kournikova's bad left thigh forced her to quit during her most recent WTA Tour match, in the first round at Charleston, S.C., on April 9. She's won just one of six tour-level matches in 2003, beating Henrieta Nagyova in the opening round at the Australian Open in January. That ended the Russian's streak of four consecutive first-round losses at Grand Slam events. Kournikova peaked in the rankings at No. 8, most recently in May 2001, but she has yet to win a singles title and now is 78th. In an attempt to get back on track, she entered lower-tier tourneys, typically filled with inexperienced players trying to move up. At one such minor league event, last week in Charlottesville, Va., Kournikova lost in the first round to Bruna Colosio, a Brazilian ranked 384th. Krajicek, the 1996 Wimbledon champion, told French Open organizers he was pulling out because of an injured elbow. The Dutchman had career-threatening right elbow surgery in November 2000. He made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon last year in just his second tournament since that operation and has a 6-6 match record this season. Both Kournikova and Krajicek will be replaced in the main draw at Roland Garros by players who lose in the qualifying tournament. Other French Open withdrawals so far include Pete Sampras, Marat Safin and Tommy Haas. Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal and Andrei Pavel pulled out on Friday because of injuries. |
