DEN BOSCH, Netherlands -- Martina Hingis rallied from a 4-1
deficit in the first set to beat Jennifer Capriati 7-5, 6-2 on
Friday to advance to the Heineken Trophy final.
The top-ranked Hingis will play Ruxandra Dragomir of Romania on
Saturday in the grass-court tuneup for Wimbledon. Dragomir, the
1997 winner, beat defending champion Kristina Brandi 6-2, 6-3.
Two-time defending champion Patrick Rafter overcame a rash of
errors in the second set to beat Karim Alami of Morocco 6-3, 3-6,
6-3 in the men's quarterfinals.
Rafter, the third-seeded Australian, has won 13 straight matches
in three years at Den Bosch.
He netted three balls in the second game of the second set to
drop service. Alami took a 3-0 lead and dominated the set. But
Rafter regained the upper hand and easily won the decisive set.
In Saturday's semifinal, Rafter will play Magnus Gustafsson. The
Swede beat Martin Damm of the Czech Republic 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
In the other quarterfinals, Michael Chang beat Germany's Karsten
Braasch 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2), and France's Nicolas Escude edged Spain's
Francisco Clavet 7-5, 6-4. | |
