WIMBLEDON, England -- Tim Henman beat Luis Morejon 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 Friday to rally Britain to a 1-1 draw after the first day of its Davis Cup World Group qualifying tie with Ecuador.

In the day's first singles, Nicolas Lapentti rallied from being down a break in the final set and defeated Greg Rusedski 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. The match, played on grass on Court No. 1 at the All England Club, was stopped twice by rain.

Doubles will be played Saturday and reverse singles on Sunday. The winner advances into the 2001 Davis Cup World Group, the top 16 nations who actually compete for the prestigious international tennis trophy.

It was a second straight disappointing loss for the slumping Rusedski. Two weeks ago, he was upset in the first round at Wimbledon by American Vince Spadea, who had lost an ATP Tour 21-consecutive matches before beating the Briton.

Romania 1, Zimbabwe 1
HARARE, Zimbabwe -- Zimbabwe's Byron Black and Romania's Andrei Pavel won as the two nations split the opening singles matches on the indoor hard court at the National Sports Center.

Black beat Razvan Sabau of Romania 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the opening match before Pavel defeated Zimbabwe's third-ranked singles player, Kevin Ullyett, 6-4, 7-6, 6-2.

Black, a 13-year-veteran of the Zimbabwean Davis Cup side who last week became the first Zimbabwean to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, prevailed after more than 2{ hours at Harare's indoor National Sports Center.

Ullyett was playing only his second Davis Cup singles match.

Black is scheduled to play alongside his younger brother Wayne in Saturday's doubles.

Romania is attempting to reach the World Group for the first time since 1997.

Netherlands 2, Uzbekistan 0
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan -- Richard Krajicek and Sjeng Schalken combined to give the Netherlands a 2-0 lead after the opening-day singles.

Krajicek crushed Oleg Ogorodov 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 and Schalken stopped Vadim Kutsenko 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 as on-court temperatures reached 108 degrees.
