LONDON -- John McEnroe outplayed Mansour Bahrami 6-3, 6-4 Thursday, then looked toward his Honda Challenge seniors showdown with five-time Wimbledon champion Bjorn Borg.
The two -- who twice met in the Wimbledon final, Borg winning in
1980, McEnroe in 1981 -- will clash Friday.
After beating John Lloyd on Wednesday's opening day at the Royal
Albert Hall, McEnroe had to put up with the tricks of Bahrami, who
performs more as a crowd pleaser than a tournament winner.
"You go along with it if you're in the mood as long as you know the outcome is 99 percent in your favor," McEnroe said. "If you're not, you try and push the pedal and get on with it."
Now McEnroe has to beat Borg to guarantee a place in the semifinal.
"I'm looking forward to playing Bjorn, then moving forward and trying to finish it off," McEnroe said. "I feel better than I did physically, so I should play better tomorrow and on to the weekend. What matters is to win the tournament."
Borg played a late match Thursday against Lloyd.
In another match Thursday, Yannick Noah scored a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Mats Wilander in a battle of two French Open champions.
