MONTE CARLO, Monaco Hicham Arazi scored another upset
Saturday and will face Gustavo Kuerten in the final of the Masters
Series Monte Carlo, the season's first important clay-court
tournament.
Arazi, an unseeded Moroccan, beat ninth-seeded Sebastien
Grosjean of France 6-4, 6-4 to gain a place in a Masters Series
final for the first time.
Kuerten, the second-seeded Brazilian, had no trouble in his
semifinal of the $2.95 million tournament, downing teen-ager
Guillermo Coria of Argentina 6-4, 6-2.
Before his latest upset, Arazi eliminated third-seeded Magnus
Norman, defending champion Cedric Pioline and eighth-seeded Tim
Henman.
Grosjean was a semifinalist at this year's Australian Open and
is seventh in the ATP Champions Race. He defeated Arazi in three
sets in their only previous match in 1998.
Arazi, twirling his racket between points, capitalized on
Grosjean's errors to serve for the match. Grosjean took that game
but the Moroccan regrouped in the next one. He dropped only one
point and closed the match with a strong crosscourt backhander.
"Maybe he didn't play a great match, but I'm very happy to be
in the final," said Arazi, whose only title came in 1997 in his
native city of Casablanca.
Before Monte Carlo, Arazi had won only five matches in seven
events this season. He reached the quarterfinals of the Indian
Wells Master. | |
