HAMBURG, Germany Yugoslav teenager Jelena Dokic breezed
into the third round of the Betty Barclay Cup Wednesday with her
father watching from the stands for the first time since his
six-month ban from women's tennis ended.
The 18-year-old Dokic breezed past German qualifier Barbara
Rittner 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the $565,000 event, struggling only in the
first set as she lost nine straight points with erratic play and
double faults.
Damir Dokic was banned from women's tennis until the end of
April, both as a coach and as a spectator, after being tossed from
both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year following confrontations
with authorities.
Patty Schnyder of Switzerland became the first player to reach
the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 upset of third-seeded
Conchita Martinez of Spain.
Schnyder, who has fallen to 46th in the rankings, flashed some
of the form against Martinez that made her a former top 10 player.
"I can be very happy with this match," Schnyder said.
Second seed South African Amanda Coetzer also reached the
quarterfinals but struggled to overcome German wild card Bianka
Lamade.
Coetzer eventually came through 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 against an
opponent, who showed no nerves and often out-hit her more
experienced opponent.
Lamade also underlined her confidence by executing an
outrageous dropshot off a first serve to take the opening set.
But after a bright start, she was unable to maintain her
level of play, and Coetzer was never in difficulty in the
deciding set.
Two other seeds also made progress. Fifth seed Bulgarian
Magdalena Maleeva was stretched by Romania's Ruxandra Dragomir
Ilie before winning 7-5, 6-7, 6-3, while seventh seed Meghann
Shaughnessy comfortably defeated fellow American Kristina Brandi 6-2,
6-2. Send this story to a friend | Most sent stories |
