Serena cites problems with nagging knee injury

ROME – Serena Williams pulled out of the Italian Open on Monday because of a nagging knee injury, leaving the tournament without either of the Williams sisters.

Venus Williams, who won Sunday in Hamburg, Germany, cited knee problems in withdrawing from the May 14-20 clay-court event. The women's tournament is next week, following the men's competition this week.

The women's field for the French Open tuneup features defending champion Monica Seles, Martina Hingis and Jennifer Capriati.
