ROME -- Former top-ranked tennis star Marcelo Rios was
charged with attacking two military police officers and a taxi
driver early Thursday.
The Carabinieri -- Italy's paramilitary police -- charged Rios
with committing an offense against public officials.
Police said Rios, accompanied by several others, including his
trainer and a representative of the ATP, had been drinking before
they entered a taxi near St. Peter's Square.
The cab driver called police after Rios allegedly attacked him.
When two Carabinieri intervened, the tennis player assaulted them
as well, police said.
The two officers were treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
Rios was taken to nearby police headquarters.
ATP CEO Mark Miles called for an immediate review of the
situation.
A 1998 Australian Open finalist, Rios reached No. 1 in the ATP
rankings later that year. He has been struggling in recent months,
including losing a second-round match Wednesday to Spain's Juan
Carlos Ferreroat the Italian Open.
