Hingis, Kournikova win first doubles title of year

Reuters

MOSCOW -- Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova salvaged some pride from the Kremlin Cup by teaming up to win the women's doubles final on Sunday.

Kournikova and world No. 1 Hingis, who were seeded second, beat Russians Elena Dementieva and Lina Krasnorutskaya, 7-6, 6-3, for their first doubles title this year.

Hingis was reunited with Kournikova after the Russian made a comeback following a long-term foot injury that had kept her out of tennis for much of 2001.

In Moscow, the Swiss top seed lost in straight sets to Dementieva in the quarterfinals while Kournikova crashed to a First-round defeat to 17-year-old compatriot Galina Fokina.

Kournikova had to go to hospital after losing to Fokina to have her foot checked.

"Obviously, in doubles you don't have to run as much as in singles, so my foot is okay for the moment " said Kournikova.

"But I have to be careful after such a long injury layoff, that's why I went to hospital just to make sure that everything is all right."

Earlier in the day, Dementieva lost to Yugoslavia's Jelena Dokic, 6-3, 6-3, in the singles final.

Hingis and Kournikova said they enjoyed playing together and would continue their partnership this year and next.

"We are scheduled to play in three more tournaments this year, in Filderstadt, Zurich and Linz, as well as next January at the Australian Open," they said.
