AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Top-seeded Marat Safin dropped a set to Michael Chang on Tuesday before advancing to the second round of the Heineken Open at Stanley Street. The 21-year-old Russian conceded the first set before gaining control and prevailing 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Wimbledon champion and second-seeded Goran Ivanisevic beat Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 7-6 (5), 6-3, and sixth-seeded Greg Rusedski beat Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Two seeds crashed out, with No. 3 Jan-Michael Gambill of the United States losing 6-0, 7-6 (3) to Francesco Clavet of Spain, and No. 8 and defending champion Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia falling 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to qualifier Gilles Elseneer of Belgium. Fifth-seeded Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic advanced with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy, and former champion Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands beat Galo Blanco of Spain 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. |
