HOBART, Australia -- One day after defeating former
Australian Open champion Mary Pierce, Spain's Anabel Medina
Garrigues advanced to the semifinals Thursday at the $110,000
ANZ Tasmanian International tennis event.
Medina Garrigues eased to a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over top seed and
defending champion Rita Grande of Italy to secure her third
career WTA Tour semifinal appearance.
"She played well and I was very tired," Grande said. "Both my
legs were sore, it was very hot and my body didn't want to run and
do what I was thinking."
On Wednesday, the 19-year-old swept past Pierce, who
was bothered by hamstring and ankle injuries. Medina
Garrigues' semifinal opponent will be seventh seed Amy Frazier, who outlasted doubles
partner Janette Husarova of Slovakia, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
Eighth seed Nicole Pratt of Australia advanced with a 6-4, 7-6
(7-3) triumph over No. 5 Meilen Tu of the United States.
The final semifinal spot will go to the winner of the match
between Russia's Alina Jidkova and Slovakia's Martina Sucha.
This year's winner takes home $16,000.
