Clijsters loses first match in return from arm injury

Associated Press

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Julie Dechy of France beat top-seeded Belgian Kim Clijsters 6-2, 7-5 on Friday in the second round of the Pacific Life Open.

Clijsters, a career-high No. 3 in the WTA Tour rankings and finalist at last year's tournament, hadn't played since sustaining a stress fracture to her upper right arm at the Australian Open in January. Her time out of action was evident against Dechy, ranked No. 35 in the world.

Many of Clijsters' shots sailed long as she committed 55 unforced errors, while hitting 24 winners. Dechy, who lost to Jennifer Capriati in the semifinals last week at Scottsdale, Ariz., hit only eight winners but made just 19 unforced errors.

Dechy breezed through the first set, then took control of the second with a service break in the 11th game.

Third-seeded Justine Henin of Belgium rallied from a one-set, 3-4 deficit to beat Maja Matevzic 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, in her second round match.

Henin, ranked No. 7 on the WTA Tour, played inconsistently against the left-hander from Slovenia, hitting 47 winners but making 59 unforced errors. Henin also had nine double faults.

Matevzic, No. 73 in the world, was equally inconsistent, offsetting 27 winners with 43 unforced errors.

Matevzic was unable to capitalize on several opportunities to take control of the match. She was up 15-40 on Henin's serve in the sixth game of the second set, but couldn't get the service break that would have given her a 4-2 lead.

Then, in the ninth game of the third set, Matevzic failed to hold service after being up 40-0. Henin followed by serving out the match at love.

"I was nervous at that point," Matevzic said. "I wasn't attacking. I should have done something more. I was too passive."

Henin, off since losing to Venus Williams in the final of the Proximus Diamond Games in Antwerp on Feb. 17, also got a big assist when her shot tipped the top of the net and ricocheted by Matevzic for a service break in the ninth game of the second set.

That gave Henin a 5-4 lead and she held serve at 15 to even the match.

In other matches Friday, seventh-seeded Silvia Farina Elia of Italy struggled to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Evie Dominikovic of Australia, and No. 8 Elena Dementieva of Russia eliminated Amy Frazier 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. The only upset was turned in by Cara Black of Zimbabwe, who beat Cristina Torrens Valero of Spain 6-4, 6-1.

Second-seeded Martina Hingis will play her first match Saturday.
