HAMBURG, Germany -- Fifth seed Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia avoided a three-match losing streak with Tuesday's 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 victory over Russian Anastasia Myskina in the first round at the Betty Barclay Cup claycourt event. Dokic reached the semifinals three weeks ago at Amelia Island but retired in the second set against Justine Henin with a stomach virus and meakly lost her only match at Charleston to Anna Smashnova two weeks ago. The 19-year-old from Yugoslavia, who reached the semifinals here last year, claimed her first title of the year last month at Sarasota. She appeared in the final of the Paris Indoor in February, but was forced to default the match due to a strain in her right thigh -- an injury that kept her out of action for two weeks. In matches between two non-seeded players, Italy's Francesca Schiavone thrashed Uzbekistan's Iroda Tulyaganova, 6-0, 6-1; Magui Serna of Spain defeated Russia's Tatiana Panova, 7-5, 6-1; and Austrian Barbara Schett topped Slovakian Martina Sucha, 7-5, 6-4. Schett went 2-0 in singles, including a defeat of world No. 6 Monica Seles, as Austria shocked the United States in the first round of Federation Cup last weekend. Later Tuesday, Conchita Martinez of Spain encounters wild card Marlene Weingartner of Germany. Martinez won this event in 1995 and reached the final a year later, but is just 4-7 this season. First prize is $93,000.
