GSTAAD, Switzerland -- David Nalbandian, a surprise finalist at Wimbledon, won't be around for the end of the Swiss Open after losing in the first round Wednesday to Andrei Pavel of Romania.

Nalbandian, a straight-sets loser to Lleyton Hewitt in Sunday's men's final at Wimbledon, was beaten 7-5, 6-3 by fourth-seeded Pavel in a match begun Tuesday and delayed several times by rain.

Nalbandian, the 20-year-old Argentine who entered the Swiss Open unseeded, had moved steadily up the world rankings off a win in Portugal and his impressive run at Wimbledon.

Pavel, who lost to Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador in the third round at Wimbledon, moved into a second-round match against Marc Rosset of Switzerland. Rosset advanced with a victory Tuesday over compatriot George Bastl.

Also on Wednesday, Roger Federer of Switzerland was knocked out in a second-round match, losing 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to qualifier Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic.

In the next round, Stepanek will face Attila Savolt of Hungary, who downed Karol Kucera of Slovakia 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Galo Blanco of Spain won 7-5, 7-6 (1) over Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, who had beaten French Open champion Albert Costa in the first round here.

Also in the second round, Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia defeated Stefan Koubek of Austria 6-4, 6-4.
