Kafelnikov expected to return to Moscow on Thursday

Reuters

MOSCOW -- Yevgeny Kafelnikov, replaced during Russia's Davis Cup triumph last weekend, has undergone surgery to remove a varicose vein in his left leg in a Zurich hospital.

"Everything went well and he feels fine right now," said Russian tennis chief and Davis Cup captain Shamil Tarpishchev after a telephone conversation with Kafelnikov.

On Sunday, Tarpishchev dropped Kafelnikov, who had lost his opening singles and doubles, and replaced him with Mikhail Youzhny for the decisive fifth rubber of the Davis Cup final against France in Paris. Youzhny, 20, beat Paul-Henri Mathieu to give Russia a thrilling 3-2 victory,

Tarpishchev said that he expected Kafelnikov to be back in Moscow on Thursday as the Russians plan to honor their Davis Cup heroes the following day.

Kafelnikov, 28, said he would retire from the sport if Russia won the Davis Cup for the first time.
