AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Former world No. 3 Mary Pierce lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to her Argentinian doubles partner Paola Suarez in the second round of the ASB Classic on Wednesday.

Defending champion and top-seeded Anna Pistolesi advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over unseeded Elena Likhovtseva.

Pistolesi will face Jill Craybas of Chicago, who won an all-American clash with Californian Meilen Tu 6-4, 6-4.

Second-seeded Eleni Daniilidou, who jumped more than 60 places to 22 in world rankings in 2002, beat Martina Muller of Germany 6-3, 6-0, and will meet fifth-seeded Suarez in the final eight.

Also, Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi beat American qualifier Ashley Harkleroad 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (5), Cho Yoon-jeong of South Korea upset sixth-seeded Clarisa Fernandez of Argentina 7-5, 6-2 and Laura Granville of the United States beat Cara Black of Zimbabwe 6-3, 6-2.
