MADRAS, India -- Mark Philippoussis lost in his first tournament since the U.S. Open, falling 6-2, 6-1 to sixth-seeded Rainer Schuettler of Germany in the second round of the Tata Open.
Philippoussis, an Australian coming back from an injury to his left knee, was unable to display his booming serve.
Schuettler advanced to the quarterfinals, where he will play France's Jean-Rene Lisnard, a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 winner over Israel's Noam Okun. Okun entered the tournament as a replacement for injured Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands.
Defending champion and top-seeded Guillermo Canas of Argentina also made the final eight with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic. Canas next faces Slovakia's Karol Kucera, who Tuesday defeated Cecil Mamiit of the United States 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-3. |
