DOHA, Qatar -- Mary Pierce of France recovered from a poor second set and beat Anca Barna of Germany 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 Monday to reach the second round of the Qatar Open.

Pierce, who lost in the first round of this tournament in 2001, will next play second-seeded Myskina Anastasia of Russia. Myskina had a first-round bye.

Sixth-seed Francesco Schiavone of Italy lost 2-6, 3-6 to Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia. Third-seeded Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria downed Rosanna Nefa De Los Rios of Paraguay 6-2, 6-1.

Russia's Dinara Safina, the 16-year-old sister of tennis star Marat Safin, beat Italy's Antonella Serra Zanetti 6-2, 7-6 (6).

Last year's finalists, Monica Seles and Tamarine Tanasugarn, are competing. Seles, the defending champion, is seeded first and Tanasugarn is seeded fourth.
