PARIS -- Serena Williams and Lleyton Hewitt were selected as the top seeds for the French Open on Tuesday. Williams, who started her "Serena Slam'' with a victory in the French Open last year, is 16-3 all-time at the clay-court tournament, which starts Monday. She enters the event after losing in the semifinals at the Italian Open. The world's top-ranked player is 26-2 on the season, with the other loss coming in the Family Circle Cup. Kim Clijsters of Belgium is No. 2, followed by Venus Williams, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Amelie Mauresmo. Americans have the next three spots: Lindsay Davenport is No. 6, Jennifer Capriati is No. 7 and Chanda Rubin is No. 8. Three-time winner Monica Seles is No. 12. Hewitt has never won the French Open. His best finish was the quarterfinals in 2001, when he lost to Juan Carlos Ferrero. American Andre Agassi, who won the French in 1999, is No. 2. Ferrero, who was the runner-up last year, is No. 3, followed by Carlos Moya and Roger Federer. American Andy Roddick is sixth, and defending champion Albert Costa is ninth.
