BASTAD, Sweden -- Mariano Zabaleta beat Nicolas Lapentti 6-3, 6-4 Sunday in an all-South American final at the Swedish Open. The 25-year-old Zabaleta earned his second career ATP Tour title. He also won at Bogota in 1998. "But this one is bigger, this is different. I'm really happy,'' said Zabaleta, who hugged his coach in the stands after the win, then ran a lap of honor, tossing his baseball cap, shirt and even his shoes to the crowd. "To win here in Bastad feels so good ... this tournament is unbelievable, so good.'' Playing in front of a sellout crowd of nearly 5,000, Zabaleta broke serve to take a 3-1 lead in the first set, and held serve the rest of the way to win the set in about 30 minutes. Lapentti continued to struggle with his serve in the second set, saving two break points at 15-40 before holding to 4-3. Zabaleta broke Lapentti again for a 5-4 lead and held his serve to close out the match.
