STANFORD, Calif. -- Serena Williams withdrew from the Bank of the West Classic on Sunday because of pain in her left knee.

The top-ranked Williams had said Friday she was looking forward to making her debut in the event, which begins Monday. The two-time Wimbledon champ did not mention the injury. Sister Venus Williams is the defending Bank of the West champion.
