TOKYO -- Top-seeded Rainer Schuettler beat unseeded American Robert Kendrick 6-3, 6-2 Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Japan Open. In the women's competition, American Jill Craybas, the defending champion, lost her quarterfinal match 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Spain's Arantxa Parra. Also, top-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan withdrew from her match because of a finger injury, and second-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn was eliminated by unseeded Zheng Jie of China. In other men's matches, fourth-seeded Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic lost to unseeded Cyril Saulnier of France 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, and sixth-seeded Nicolas Kiefer of Germany lost to Scott Draper of Australia 7-5, 6-2. Second-seeded Sebastien Grosjean advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Dennis Van Scheppingen of the Netherlands; Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand beat Takao Suzuki of Japan 6-2, 7-6 (3); fifth-seeded Mark Philippoussis overpowered 10th-seeded Croatian Mario Ancic 6-4, 7-5; and American Jan-Michael Gambill, seeded eighth, beat Michel Kratochvil of Switzerland 6-3, 7-5. In women's matches, Zheng advanced with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win, and Russian teenager Maria Sharapova, the No. 5 seed, defeated Akiko Morigami of Japan, 6-1, 6-3, in a second-round match. |
