LYON, France -- Top-seeded Rainer Schuettler overpowered defending champion Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-2 Wednesday to reach the second round of the Lyon Open.

In other first-round action, No. 5-seeded Mardy Fish was knocked off by Cyril Saulnier 7-5, 6-3, while No. 2 Sebastien Grosjean quit with a sprained ankle after splitting the first two sets against Nicolas Mahut, and No. 3 Paradorn Srichaphan beat David Sanchez 6-1, 6-1.

Also, qualifier Xavier Malisse defeated Andre Pavel 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, and Arnaud Clement eliminated Flavio Saretta 6-3, 6-4.

Mikhail Youzhny became the first player to move into the quarterfinals by outlasting Dominik Hrbaty 1-6, 7-6 (1), 6-2.
