STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Taylor Dent beat second-seeded Sjeng Schalken 6-3, 7-5 Tuesday at the Stockholm Open, leading three Americans into the second round. Robby Ginepri defeated Kristof Vliegen of Belgium 6-1, 6-3, and Mardy Fish beat another qualifier, Paul Baccanello of Australia 6-4, 7-6 (4). Seventh-seeded Wayne Ferreira lost 6-4, 6-2 to Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela and No. 8 seed Jarkko Nieminen of Finland lost 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-2 to Frenchman Gregory Carraz. Playing his trademark serve-and-volley game, Dent repeated his result from last year, when he beat Schalken in the first round. Dent has prepared well for the tournament after losing in the Tennis Masters Series-Madrid qualifying tournament last week. Now, Dent hopes to repeat his performances from earlier this month, when he went 10-0, winning ATP tournaments in Bangkok and Moscow and beating world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero. Dent took a week off after his back-to-back wins. "Last week in Madrid I was not fully prepared,'' he said. "But I've been here all week after that, getting ready for Stockholm. "Every win here gives a chance to get on the roll again and gain momentum, but just now I'm not good enough to look past one win at a time.'' Fish meets yet another qualifier, Julien Benneteau of France, in the second round Wednesday. Jan-Michael Gambill, another American, plays Davide Sanguinetti of Italy. In other results, Thomas Enqvist of Sweden beat Hicham Arazi of Morocco, 7-5, 6-3; promising Swede Joachim Johansson topped Norwegian qualifier Jan Frode Andersen 7-5, 6-3 and Benneteau defeated Austria's Jurgen Melzer 6-1, 6-1. |
