Retired star Li Na gives birth to daughter

Retired tennis star Li Na and her husband, Dennis, are celebrating the arrival of their first child.

Li gave birth to a girl named Alisa early Wednesday morning. She released the news on her microblog, posting a footprint picture of her daughter.

IMG Tennis also posted a picture of the family to its Twitter account.

Li is one of China's best-known athletes and became the first Asian tennis player to win a Grand Slam tournament when she captured the French Open in 2011. She also won the Australian Open last year and returned to Melbourne Park in January to announce her pregnancy.

She retired from professional tennis in September, citing recurring knee injuries.

According to Forbes, she earned $70 million in prize money and sponsorship during her peak period of 2010-14.

The child shares the birthday of Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal, but a tennis career for the child is far from certain. Li has said she would encourage her daughter to take up sports, although not necessarily tennis alone, and quipped that the tennis she reportedly played while pregnant did not amount to "pre-natal education."
