Career Highlights

1999

  • Had the best showing of her career at the Australian Open, where she lost to Martina Hingis in the final -- becaming the first unseeded woman to reach a Grand Slam singles final since Venus Williams reached the final at the 1997 U.S. Open. She beat three seeded players en route to the finals -- No. 1 Lindsay Davenport in the semifinals, No. 8 Patty Schnyder in the second round and No. 11 Dominique Van Roost in the quarterfinals. Her ranking jumped from No. 29 to No. 17.

    1998

  • At the German Open, became the first qualifier and fourth-lowest ranked player (No. 65) to reach a Tier I-level tournament final on the WTA Tour. Having never reached a quarterfinal on the Tour, saved a match point to qualify for the main draw, then collected her first wins over Top 5 players, ousting the world Nos. 2 and 3 players, becoming the lowest-ranked player to defeat two of the world's top three players in a tournament. Her ranking vaulted to a then-career high No. 34.

  • As a wildcard into Prague, reached her second quarterfinal on the major tour.

  • Scored third career Top 10 win over countrywoman Nathalie Tauziat, ranked ninth, at New Haven.

  • Playing in her first U.S. Open, reached the third round and stretched No. 1 Hingis to three sets before losing.

    1996

  • Won the French Open and Wimbledon junior singles titles.

    Notes
