Enjoyed best US Open performance, upsetting 14th seed Dominique Van Roost to reach the fourth round. She stretched sixth seed Monica Seles to three sets before losing.
After having surgery in November of 1997, returned to the Tour in May at the German Open.

Reached first career Grand Slam quarterfinal at Australian Open, defeating seventh seed Lindsay Davenport in the fourth round. Her world ranking subsequently cracked the Top 20 for the first time at No. 19.
Ousted eighth seed Anke Huber in the first round of the French Open. Following the tournament, her ranking moved up to a then-career high No. 14.
Defeated Jennifer Capriati in the second round of the Canadian Open.
Joined the Million Dollar Club in career prize money during the year.

In November reached a career-high ranking at No. 27.
Gave best-ever tournament performance at the Canadian Open, earning her first-ever victories over Top 10 players when she defeated fifth-ranked Anke Huber in the second round and eighth-ranked Mary Joe Fernandez in the quarterfinals as a qualifier. Became the tournament's first qualifier to reach the semifinals.
Continued 1996 string of upsets over Top 10 players, taking out sixth-ranked Kimiko Date in first round of U.S. Open; defeated her fourth Top 10 player of the year, No. 10 Mary Pierce, to reach semifinals at Tokyo-Nichirei.
