  • At Wimbledon, reached the third round with a 3-6, 7-5, 11-9 victory over Tara Synder in the second round after trailing 3-5 in the second set and 0-4 in the third.

  • Reached her first quarterfinal of 1998 in Madrid; the following week, reached the fourth round of Roland Garros, winning a Grand Slam match for the first time in a year.

  • Ousted eighth seed Anke Huber in the first round in Sydney.

    1997

  • Seeded seventh, won first career Tour singles title at Linz, completing a return to the Tour after missing most of the 1996 season with a hand injury. Defeated top seed Jana Novotna in the semifinals and second seed Karina Habsudova in the final.

  • Ousted 10th seed Barbara Paulus in the first round of Amelia Island followed by a win over Venus Williams.

  • Reached her second semifinal of Quebec City

  • Played the first match ever on the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the U.S. Open, falling to Tamarine Tanasugarn.

    1996

  • Quarterfinal win over third seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario at Australian Open 6-4, 2-6, 16-14 was longest women singles match ever in the Australian Open, lasting 3 hours, 33 minutes. The win advanced her to her first-ever Grand Slam semifinal and vaulted her ranking into the world s Top 10 for the first time.

  • Won first Grand Slam title by winning the doubles at the Australian Open with partner Arantxa Sanchez Vicario -- it was the first tournament the pair had played together.

    Teamed up with men's player Justin Gimelstob to give the United States its first title at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia.

  • Defeated Jennifer Capriati at Indian Wells third round 6-3, 6-3 en route to quarterfinal finish and won doubles title with Brenda Schultz-McCarthy; following tournament, joined the Million Dollar Club in career earnings.

  • Seeded sixth, reached final at Lipton, upsetting No. 4 Gabriela Sabatini in the quarterfinals. Following tournament, ranking rose to a career-high No. 8.

  • Out of action starting in April due to a fracture of the hook of the hamate bone in her right hand suffered at the Lipton Championships. Returned in June but retired after one set of first match. Underwent surgery in September to remove the hook of the hamate bone -- returned in November.

    1995

  • Involved in two of most memorable Grand Slam matches of 1995. Rallied from 0-5 and 0-40 in final set to upset Jana Novotna en route to quarterfinal berth at French Open and beat Patricia Hy-Boulais of Canada in the longest match in Wimbledon women's history.

  • In Pan American Games, won silver medal in doubles and bronze in singles

  • One of 16 players to qualify for the season-ending tour championships.

    1991

  • Turned pro at age 15 at U.S. Open and reached final of next tournament, at Phoenix.
