1998

  • Reached her first Grand Slam final in 43 attempts at Wimbledon at the age of 30. She was the first French woman to reach the Wimbledon final since Suzanne Lenglen in 1925 and, ranked 15th, the lowest-ranked player to reach the final there in the Open Era. Defeated second seed Lindsay Davenport in the quarterfinals and fell to third seed Jana Novotna in the final.

  • Enjoyed best U.S. Open in five years, reaching the fourth round.

  • At the Grand Slam Cup, ousted newly-crowned U.S. Open champion and world No. 2 Lindsay Davenport in the first round

  • At age 30, cracked the Top 10 for the first time on January 12.

  • At the Paris Indoors, saved two match points when down 2-5 in the third set against Sarah Pitkowski and came back to win to reach the semifinals.

  • Reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon after saving three match points against her in the fourth round against Sandrine Testud.

  • Collected second win over a Top 10 player, defeating No. 7 Anke Huber in the Indian Wells third round to reach the quarterfinals.

  • Unseeded in a tournament that included seven of the world's Top 10 players, reached the final at Zurich before falling to fourth seed Lindsay Davenport 7-6, 7-5 -- was the first unseeded finalist in the history of the tournament.
