    Equipment Essentials for Injury Prevention

    Content provided byProfessional Team Physicians

Proper equipment is an essential part of injury prevention. To ensure maximum protection, equipment should be worn during all practice and game situations. All equipment and gear should be fitted to your size and weight, and should be maintained and in game-time condition.

A complete set of protective equipment includes:

  • A helmet, neck roll, and mouth guard with keeper strap

  • Shoulder pads and a jersey

  • Hip pads, tail pads, and an athletic supporter or cup

  • Thigh guards, knee pads, and padded football pants

  • Football cleats or turf shoes

In addition to wearing essential equipment, you may also want to invest in supplementary gear to help further prevent injuries.

    Non-essential equipment includes:

    • Football gloves

    • Wrist and arm guards or pads

    • A flak jacket (to protect the ribs)

    • Ankle guards

Taping your joints, particularly your ankles, wrists, and fingers, can provide added support and prevent injury. To be effective, taping must be done by a trained professional immediately prior to activity.
