MIAMI (AP) -- Sandy Brondello scored 21 points to lead the Miami Sol to a 68-59 victory over the New York Liberty on Thursday night in the opener for both teams. Brondello, who sat out last season to play for the Australian Olympic team, shot 9-for-15 from the field and scored 11 points in the second half. The Sol built a 13-point lead in the first half. The Liberty closed within five points, 45-40, on a layup by Tari Phillips midway through the second half, but the Sol used a 9-2 run to maintain control. Vickie Johnson scored 20 points for the Liberty, whose 20 turnovers led to 20 Miami points. Phillips added 11 points and Crystal Robinson had 10 for New York. Elena Baranova scored 16 points and Debbie Black had 10 points, seven assists and three steals for Miami.
