Sparks cut top draft choice

 Associated Press

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Sparks waived first-round draft choice Nicole Kubik on Sunday along with two other players, reducing their roster to the WNBA's 11-player regular-season limit.

The Sparks also waived free-agent guards Abby Garchek and Felecity Willis, and placed centers Marte Alexander and Carly Funicello on the injured reserve list.

Kubik was the 15th overall choice in last month's draft. The 5-foot-10 guard from Nebraska was a second-team All-Big 12 selection last season, averaging 14.6 points per game. Kubik averaged 7.3 points in three exhibition games with the Sparks.

"Although Nicole Kubik worked very hard in camp, we have a lot of very talented guards on our team and are returning eight veterans from a team that went 20-12," first-year general manager Penny Toler said.

"It was very difficult to earn a position on our team. We had a lot of players who played very well who have bright futures in the WNBA who unfortunately we weren't able to keep."

When selecting Kubik, first-year Sparks coach Michael Cooper called her "an excellent guard."

The Sparks open the season at home Wednesday against the Utah Starzz.
