CLEVELAND -- Eva Nemcova, the Cleveland Rockers' leading
scorer, will miss the rest of the WNBA season after tearing a
ligament in her left knee.
Nemcova was injured late in the first half of Cleveland's 75-67
loss in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

"I drove to the basket, planted my foot and twisted and that
was it," the 6-foot-3 Nemcova said before the Rockers played host
to the New York Liberty on Monday night.
Nemcova, 27, a native of the Czech Republic, was averaging 13.2
points this season and came into her fourth WNBA season averaging
12.2 points and 3.8 rebounds. Nemcova, who holds the WNBA record
for consecutive free throws with 66, was a first-team all-league
selection in 1997 and a second-team pick the next season.
"I was surprised it was this bad because I felt nothing at the
time," Nemcova said. "The doctors told me how bad it was Sunday
and I cried.
"Our team was doing so much better and now I cannot help. I am
very sad."
Cleveland, which won half of its first 14 games this season
under new coach Dan Hughes, has already matched its victory total
of last season when the Rockers went 7-25.
Nemcova said she will have surgery in Cleveland later this month
and hopes to be back on the court in "January or February" with
Messina of the Italian League. She was the MVP of the 2000 Italian
League All-Star game and averaged 19.4 points last winter. | |
