PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Fire traded veteran guard Sophia Witherspoon to the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday, along with Portland's first-round choice in the WNBA draft, North Carolina's Nikki Teasley, for Los Angeles Sparks guard Ukari Figgs.
Portland also will get the Sparks' second-round pick, guard Gergana Slavtcheva of Florida International. Minnesota also engineered a trade Friday, acquiring the rights to the ninth overall pick, guard Shaunzinski Gortman from South Carolina. The Lynx traded forwards Erin Buescher and Maylana Martin to the Sting.
The Fire used the No. 5 selection to take Teasley, a 6-foot guard who averaged 15.2 points and 5.7 assists per game as a senior, earning All-ACC honors.
Witherspoon, 32, had been the leader of the Fire since it began play in the WNBA as an expansion team in 2000. The 5-10 player averaged 12 points a game last season and was fourth in the league in 3-pointers with 57.
The 5-9 Figgs will join Jackie Stiles in the backcourt when the Fire open training camp next Monday. In three seasons with the Sparks, Figgs averaged 8.0 points per game and was seventh in the league in assists at 3.9. She also had the league's second-best 3-point percentage (.462).
The 6-1 Slavtcheva averaged 16.6 points during her senior year at Florida International. She was named All-Sun Belt Conference the past three years.
Portland selected three other players in the draft: In the third round, the team took 5-6 guard Mandy Nightingale of Colorado. In the fourth round, it chose center 6-2 Melody Johnson of Arizona State and 6-foot guard Monique Cardenas of Florida. |
