SHANGHAI, China -- Sheryl Swoopes scored 20 points as the United States beat Lithuania 105-48 Monday and advanced to the second round of the Women's World Basketball Championship. Lisa Leslie added 15 points for the Americans, who won all three of their opening-round games. The teams were tied at 17 midway through the first quarter before the Americans closed the period with a 15-2 run. The U.S. team limited Lithuania to just seven points in the second quarter and built a 51-26 lead by the break. The Americans made five 3-pointers in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. The defending champion U.S. team is looking for its seventh gold medal since the championships began in 1953. Agne Abromaite and Sandra Valuzyte each scored 10 points for Lithuania, which advanced with a 1-2 record. In other games, Lauren Jackson, of the Seattle Storm, scored 25 points to lead undefeated Australia to a 98-53 win over Japan. Chen Luyun's 23 points paced China to an 81-63 win over Senegal. Awa Gueye led Senegal with 25 points and six rebounds. Also, Russia beat Taiwan 83-46; Brazil defeated Yugoslavia 86-75; Spain beat Argentina 97-55; France defeated South Korea 90-80; and Cuba eliminated Tunisia, 90-65.
