The WNBA's annual draft is in serious jeopardy, the Sacramento Bee reported in Friday's editions. The draft, which is scheduled to be held April 16, might be postponed if the league and the players' union can't reach an agreement. "We can't go forward without an agreement," said Traci Cook, the WNBA's senior director for strategic and corporate communications, told the newspaper. "We have no deal with the players, so we can't plan ahead." The WNBA recently changed its bylaws and ownership structure after many teams struggled with low attendance and revenues. The union wants better pay for its players, who averaged $46,000 last season according to the union and $55,000 according to the WNBA. The players also want some kind of free agency and more freedom to market themselves. The WNBA's seventh season is slated to begin May 22. Team training camps are scheduled to open April 25, while the pre-draft combine next Thursday in Chicago also might be on hold. "We can't do anything without that agreement," said Cook in the report. "We'll reschedule if we have to." Information from the Associated Press contributed to this report. |
