Point guard previously named rookie of the year

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Point guard Diana Taurasi became the second Mercury player ever selected to the All-WNBA first team on Friday.

It was the second honor in two weeks for Taurasi, who was chosen the league's rookie of the year on Sept. 27.

Forward-post Jennifer Gillom earned first-team recognition in 1998 after being a second-team choice the year before.

The 22-year-old Taurasi averaged 17 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 34 games, helping the Mercury improve to 17-17 after winning only eight games in 2003. The nine-game turnaround ranks among the top five in WNBA history.

The Mercury had 2003's worst record and profited with the first choice in this year's draft, using it to get Taurasi.
