TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State has vaulted to the top spot of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The outside shooting of Seminole senior guards Tanae Davis-Cain and Mara Freshour brought down Duke (No. 6 ESPN/USA Today, No. 3 AP) 82-75 in overtime Thursday to give Florida State (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 18 AP) sole possession of first in the ACC for the first time since joining the league in the 1991-92 season.
Freshour scored a season-high 21 points, including a 3-pointer that tied the score at 68 to send the game into overtime while Davis-Cain and junior center Jacinta Monroe added 17 points each.
"Their backcourt was absolutely a dominant force," Duke coach Joanne McCallie said. "We put 75 points on the board. That's enough. That's plenty. Of course they had something to say with their 82."
The 82 points were nearly 30 more than the Blue Devils have given up on average this year.
"Wow," was Florida State coach Sue Semrau's response to her team's highest scoring total in ACC play this season. "That says a lot. Their defense is tremendous."
It was Florida State's second win in their past 22 games against Duke, but beating ranked teams has become a familiar achievement for the Seminoles.
"We're not playing the name on the chest anymore, we're just going out to win," Freshour said. "Our confidence right now is really allowing us to do that."
The Seminoles (18-4, 6-0 ACC) haven't lost since an 83-71 defeat to No. 1 UConn in a Christmas tournament in Cancun, Mexico.
Duke joined Texas A&M, Georgia Tech and Virginia as ranked teams to fall to the Seminoles in the past four weeks. And yet another, Maryland (No. 9 ESPN/USA Today, No. 8 AP), visits on Monday.
Duke (17-2, 5-1) was led by Jasmine Thomas' 16 points.
The Seminoles erased a six-point deficit in the final 48 seconds to get the game to overtime while winning their ninth straight and ending Duke's 15-game win streak.
Joy Cheek's jumper with 58 seconds left gave the Blue Devils what appeared to be a safe lead at 66-60, but Freshour countered 12 seconds later and then drilled the game-tying shot after a basket and free throw by freshman Cierra Bravard while Duke went scoreless.
Freshour clinched the victory with two free throws with 23 seconds left in overtime to make it 80-73.
Monroe, Freshour and Davis-Cain each grabbed eight rebounds to help the Seminoles to a 40-33 advantage and sophomore guard Courtney Ward had 11 points, 10 assists and four steals.
Chante Black and Abby Waner each scored 14 points for Duke, which hadn't lost since Nov. 21 to Hartford in an early-season tournament in Chicago.
The Blue Devils built a 28-16 lead in the first half, capitalizing on a Florida State scoreless drought that lasted almost six minutes.
Duke shot 56 percent from the field in the first half and led 37-24.
