Gennifer Brandon leaves Cal team

California Golden Bears forward Gennifer Brandon has taken an indefinite leave to deal with undisclosed personal matters, coach Lindsay Gottlieb announced Sunday before the Bears' nonconference game against Northwestern.

"Gennifer Brandon is currently not involved in team activities as she handles more pressing personal matters," Gottlieb said in a statement. "We love Genn. We support Genn. She remains a part of the Cal women's basketball family. We hope to have her back with us soon, but there is no timetable for her return."

Brandon, a fifth-year senior, has seen limited time on the court this season as she recovers from August surgery to insert a rod in her lower leg, the result of recurring issues with shin splints.

The 6-foot-3 forward from Sylmar, Calif., has played in two games, averaging 11 minutes and 3.0 points.

Last season, Brandon was an all-Pac-12 performer, finishing with 19 double-doubles and averaging 12.3 points and 11.1 rebounds as Cal reached its first Final Four.
