Sylvia Hatchell hints at return

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina's Sylvia Hatchell says she could return to coaching while battling leukemia if the Tar Heels reach the Final Four.

Fourth-seeded UNC faces No. 1 seed South Carolina in this weekend's Stanford Regional. If her team advances, Hatchell said Thursday that her doctor has told her that being on the sideline for the national semifinals April 6 in Nashville, Tenn., would be "very doable."

Hatchell, 62, was diagnosed with leukemia this past fall, and associate head coach Andrew Calder has led the Tar Heels this season. Hatchell completed her last round of chemotherapy earlier this month and is waiting for her immune system to recover.

She has said that her illness is in remission and that she would be in a supporting role if she returns this season.
