COACH OF THE WEEK: Tubby Smith, Kentucky
In a big-time confrontation between Tubby Smith and Louisville coach Rick Pitino, the Wildcats benefited from better personnel and the home-court advantage. But there was tremendous pressure on Smith coming into this game given the circus atmosphere of the return of Pitino (the ex-Kentucky coach) to Rupp Arena -- and Tubby had his kids ready to play. This was his first win over Pitino after losing in five previous contests. Kentucky fans were chanting "Tubby, Tubby, Tubby" ... he had to be relieved that this pressure-packed game was in the books.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Butler
Butler shocked Indiana at the Indiana Classic. For 20 years, IU had been unblemished in its holiday tournament -- until now. Butler won 66-64 to extend its record to 13-0 and remain one of five unbeaten teams in America.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Curtis Borchardt, Stanford
Curtis Borchardt, Stanford's powerful presence on the interior, was absolutely sensational against Michigan State. He had 27 points, 10 rebounds, seven blocked shots -- his fifth double-double of the season. At the beginning of the season, I said that he had to step up for Stanford to have a strong year, and he is responding.
SHOCK OF THE WEEK: IUPUI over Georgia Tech
Are you serious? IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis) of the Mid-Continent Conference shocked ACC stalwart Georgia Tech. On paper, it looked like a Cupcake City matchup, but IUPUI posted a 98-92 victory over the Rambling Wreck.
CO-DIAPER DANDIES OF THE WEEK:
Salim Stoudamire, Arizona and Errick Craven, USC
Freshman guard Salim Stoudamire of Arizona (a relative of Damon Stoudamire) hit for 25 points against Pepperdine. Freshman guard Errick Craven of USC had a huge game against Washington State on Saturday -- 29 points (13-of-19, 3-of-4 3-pointers), six rebounds and six steals -- as the Trojans beat the Cougars.
