LANSING, Mich. -- Twelve charities are splitting $200,000 that Mike Tyson was fined for refusing to submit to a pre-fight drug test last year at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
Tyson paid the fine as part of a settlement with the Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services. He refused to submit to a urine test before his Oct. 20 fight against Andrew Golota, who quit after the second round.
Tyson tested positive for marijuana in a test taken after the fight, according to a complaint filed by the state. But the settlement made no mention of that positive test, and Tyson has never been tried on that charge.
State regulators also suspended Tyson's Michigan boxing license for 90 days and made him pay an additional state fine of $5,000.
Consumer and Industry Services Director Kathleen Wilbur said the settlement money will go to groups that help at-risk children as well as several youth boxing associations.
"The disciplinary action against Mike Tyson sends a strong message to all boxers that they will be held accountable for failing to abide by Michigan's state laws, regardless of their celebrity status," Wilbur said in a news release.
"Thanks to the $200,000 settlement, this unfortunate incident of unsportsmanlike behavior has turned into a positive for so many young people." |
